So that is how the rich travelled…

25 Apr

We started our trip home with the use of fancy schmancy Qantas first class lounge@ Melbourne where they was a tiny man with a fake British accent, waiting to pound on every first class passenger that walked through the door.

“Would you like a massage, Sir and Madam?” said the little man with fake British accent

Of course! So I went in and I’m spoilt! The room was narrow but it has high ceiling. Abundance natural light filter through the blind. Chill out music play in the background. There was a garden on the wall, everything was minimal with class but the experience was divine. I asked for a 30 mins neck and shoulder massage, it was also complimented with a cooling eye mask. Love it!

After the lovely massage, I snooped around the facilities more and took a few more shots before we board.

With so much hype on the Qantas website about Neil Perry as the head chef, I really expect a little more from our lunch and dessert. It was quite average but definitely more than what I can get from my average flights…

On the plane there was so much food and liquor floating around, I didn’t photograph all the meals I had but my favourite was the supper, a pot pie…. MMmm Mmmm….. There was also an open bar and a lounging area where passengers can also leave their seat to stretch their legs (not that they need to leave their seat to do that with the massive leg room) and share a tv show with a stranger.

So many loyalty/VIP programs out there but not many has indeed deliver the promise of exclusivity and privileges to their VIPs. Qantas has done well, creating a status symbol to be in their program and when you are their VIP member, you will be treated to a world class experience. They treat their platinum flyers like a star in Melbourne and Sydney, upgrading the platinum flyers ahead of their average customers, if available. (I heard a customer asked for an upgrade but the lady at the desk said it is already full.) The experience wasn’t over the top and is sustainable. It wasn’t 1980s tacky or intimidating. It gives customers a reason to stick, maintain and aim for their VIP program with Qantas. It is just not another plastic card in your wallet.. It will be interesting to if the other frequent flyer program are as fantastic as this.

The experience is beautiful, it is such a lovely treat for me. So that is how the rich traveled. Mmm…..
